Welcome back to the first half of the Summer term! We hope you have had a restful and enjoyable holiday. There are many things to look forward to this term with our new History related topic ‘Village in Bloom’, where we will be exploring our local surroundings.
If you have any information, photos, books or artefacts you or your child would like to share, linked to our topic, this would be fantastic as the Year 1 team are always keen to engage children and parents fully in our topics.
In maths we will begin looking at the place value of the numbers in our number system. We will move onto looking at adding and subtracting 10 and 1 from 2 digit numbers to find out which column we need to add or subtract from. Also, we will be moving on to working with number bonds to 20 to support our quick recall of number facts alongside revisiting and developing our counting in multiples of 2, 5 and 10 forwards and backwards! This term we will be developing our knowledge of division as sharing and multiplication as repeated addition. We will revisit both 2D and 3D shape to secure our knowledge of their names and properties.
Reading- in Year 1 recognising the sounds that we have learnt and blending them together to read words is key. The ability to read words that can be broken down and sounded out is important, and beginning to recognise common tricky words such as; said, the, was and what is also very important. Children are encouraged to read as much as possible at home using the colour banded books provided and it is recommended that children are read to at a level higher than they are able to read to stimulate a love of reading.
Writing- in Year 1 we are working to orally compose and record a sentence accurately using 'and', using a capital letter, best handwriting, finger spaces and a full stop. Children will be checking their own and others sentences for accuracy to encourage children to check their writing before continuing to write. We will also be looking for adjectives and a variety of punctuation.
